Tinker Toy Jeep

A 2012 Jeep Wrangler Jk build by @tinkertoyjeep/

No, this is not a shop built Jeep meant to go to SEMA, sit in a garage, or ride on a trailer. From completely stock with 13k miles to current condition, Tinker Toy Jeep was built by my husband and I in the front driveway. It's only been to a shop for oil changes, tire rotation, and the gears, locker, and truss install. It's been 4 years and more than 70k miles since buying the Jeep and our own work hasn't let us down yet. Yes it gets dirty. We drive it almost every day. To work, to shows, down old back roads, halfway across the country, and on wheeling trips. We just wash it like it's worth the time, tears, blood, sweat, and money that we've got into it. When shopping for the Jeep, we buy parts that we can trust to do what we need them to do and get us back home. We're pretty much always thinking through a wish list to keep building. If you have a favorite part that you think would look and perform great for Tinker Toy, find @tinkertoyjeep on Instagram and let us know

  • Wish List and Plans
  • * Armor - Yup slowly swapping the old bumpers to Crawltek. Next up, the rear bumper. Really hoping they design a killer tire carrier too.
  • * Lighting - Finally making some moves to change up lighting for them backroads. Baja Designs Squadron spot lights going up front with a set of their S2s for fog lights. I'll have to mod them a little to get a cut off line though. Next up will be their 6" chase light as the third brake light.
  • * Shocks - While the Fox Adventure series 2.0 shocks have done well enough, I do see a bit of fade on my long, high speed dirt road runs. I want to swap those over to Fox reservoir shocks to remove that fade.
  • * Hydraulic Bump Stops - Somewhat self explanitory but these make life on dirt roads a little more gentle. I'd love to add Fox hydraulic bumps to the Jeep.
  • * Steering Stabilizer - Although somewhat silly, I want to swap the steering stabilizer for a Fox brand one so that I have matching shock cylinders. I figure it may help with steering push from the 37's on the highway too.
  • * Remote controlled front SwayLOC - I've got the ORO SwayLOC up front, which is crazy simple to work with, but I want to make it even easier to use. I want to add their pheumatic cylinder to run on my CO2 from inside the Jeep.
  • * Rear Brakes - Stock JK brakes are terrible. I've swapped the fronts to the Mopar big brake setup already but want to swap the rears to the larger stock JL brake components to balance things out. My pedal travel is still great right now so shouldn't be too bad after the swap.
  • * Tie Rod and Top Mount Drag Link - I've not yet decided on brand but definately want to get these stock components off of here.
  • * Skid Plates - I've swapped the stock skids plates out for a less damaged stock set once already. I'm done with that. Next time I swap them it will be to Artec Industries skids.
  • * Rear Drive Shaft - I've had a Tom Wood's Custom Drive Shafts front shaft for several years and it's been great. It's time that I swap in their rear shaft as well.
  • * Powder coat the lift kit - Since the hubby picked up a JK as well and wants to put the same JKS Manufacturing lift that I have on his Jeep, I plan to powdercoat a new lift set for mine and give him my old stuff. The old parts are fine but the spray paint just isn't holding up.
  • * Audio Midrange - It's barely noticable but I've got a dead spot in my midrange. I want to add 8" Rockford Fosgate Punch subs to the soundbar to clean that up and move the speakers that are currently there to the dash.
  • * Air Filter System - The hubby has done a lot of research in fluid dynamics on car engines (he's a nitrous guy) and most aftermarket air filter systems either restrict flow or introduce hot air into the engine (not good). In his opinion, aFe Power has the best air filter setup for the JK so I plan to swap to that one day.
  • * Door Pockets - I have a Slickrock Gear dash pocket that I've converted into a switch panel. I want to add their door pockets as well. I just never really think about it until the doors go on for the winter.
  • * Light bars - Just kidding. I really do not like light bars. I see no purpose in them when there are plenty of mounting locations for good pods.
