Tech Talks with Tony Pellegrino – Seats 101

<p><strong>If I had to pick</strong> a single thing I get asked about more than anything, it’s where to start.</p>
<p>Obviously, a lot of this is budget dependent and budgets change over time but at its core it boils down to one thing&#8230;.planning. Get an idea of what your “dream Jeep” would be for your use case and start making a list of the parts you want.</p>
<p>They’ll change over time but at least get them on paper (I use Excel &#8211; but I’m a nerd 🤓).</p>

<h2 id="quality-parts-save-you-in-the-long-run">Quality parts save you in the long run.</h2>

<p><strong>Once</strong> you get that done, start with the things that will last you through the other mods. Pay attention to what people install and then replace with something better, I’d start with that better something they just installed. Every building starts with a foundation, build yours right the first time.</p>
<blockquote><p>If you want coilovers, save up and buy them.</p></blockquote>
<p>Don’t buy a cheap lift and slap it on there and then sell it two years later for 1/4 of what you paid for it, do it right the first time.</p>

<p>I know you want to get that thing lifted and cruising around to show it off but I promise you, those coilovers will turn more heads than a basic lift anyway. If you just want the conventional spring lift and that’s all you ever plan to do, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, just get a good one! Remember, you don’t just want it to look good &#8211; it has to drive good. Trust me, driving a flighty Jeep is scary as hell!!</p>
<p><strong>Pay extra for good parts!</strong></h2>
<h2 id="wheeling-you-need-to-plan-more">Wheeling? You need to plan more.</h2>
<p>If you are planning to wheel it, plan even harder. Read up on gear ratios, tire sizes, skid plates, drive shafts, lockers, disconnects, etc. those will all be very important and may even take precedence over that lift you want.</p>
<p>My next segment will be about axles so we’ll dig into those there as I know many of you have questions about them.</p>


Jeep Tip: The Build Itself.

<p>If you&#8217;re reading this chances are you might be curious about armor for your Jeep Wrangler JL or JLU and not sure what to get or where to look. I get it, been there, there&#8217;s a lot to choose from and it&#8217;s a tough decision. But hopefully, this quick read will help you.</p>
<p>When searching for what armor to run on <a href="https://revkit.com/motobilt">@reverendkit</a> I heard that Motobilt was a brand to seriously consider. Typically how I like to learn more about something like this is I try to get familiar with the manufacturer, understand who they are to see the dedication and passion for their craft. With Motobilt they looked like a great company with good people and the craftsmanship was superb.</p>
<p>I also want to see the products in full detail and installed, not on a eCommerce website with a white background and some pixaled shadows&#8230;I want &#8220;real life&#8221; use. Beaten, scraped, dinged etc&#8230; Because at first everything looks great, but what about after the 1000th time it&#8217;s been bashed against a boulder&#8230;that&#8217;s what really matters. (<strong>Pro Tip:</strong> if want to see those &#8220;real life&#8221; photos, search for a product on REVKIT and you&#8217;ll see real people doing some real shit with what they buy)</p>

<h1 id="first-lets-talk-about-those-motobilt-bumpers">First, let&#8217;s talk about those Motobilt Bumpers</h1>

<p>Ok, so we all know choosing the right set of bumpers is like walking up and down the aisle at a shoe store&#8230;so many choices, different shapes, comforts, purposes, etc&#8230;and so narrowing your choices takes some examination. The entire basis of the whole armor setup for <a href="https://revkit.com/motobilt">@reverendkit</a> was hinged on the bumpers, so they had to be badass.</p>
<blockquote><p>When it comes to armor all of it must look like one cohesive unit.</p></blockquote>
<p>The Motobilt Crusher Bumper with Bull Bar stood out from the others as A) it looks friggin&#8217; awesome, B) it is strong as hell, and C) it looked great with other Motobilt parts. Added bonus, the mid sized bull bar is spot on.</p>

<p>Now the installation of the back bumper is simple&#8230;just a few bolts and you&#8217;re done. But the front is slightly different as it&#8217;s heavier and little bulkier, but still fairly simple. (<strong>Pro Tip:</strong> depending on the size of your winch you should consider pre-installing it to the bumper before mounting to the Jeep as there isn&#8217;t much room for your hands once it&#8217;s on the Jeep)</p>

<p>A functional and sleek Rocker Guard is a very imporant and I think Motobilt really nailed it with this design inherited back from the JK style.</p>
<p>The overall design and attention to detail is awesome, and the lines of the vertical rocker guards flow well with the shape of the body to create a more natural/OEM look. Also, the rocker guard can create some opportunities for personalization if you want, just check out <a href="https://revkit.com/sergeantcrush?target=_blank">Sergeantcrushs REVKIT</a> and you&#8217;ll see the the &#8220;LS3&#8221; cut out on the side.</p>
<blockquote><p>As for strength these are truly great&#8230;they&#8217;ve been bounced, slammed and ground off of so many rocks it’s ridiculous.</p></blockquote>

<p>Now for installation, I reccomend having it done by your local Jeep shop (shoutout to 4WP! on Federal here in Denver) as there are several holes that need to be drilled into the body panels so having an experienced technition do the install will eliminate the possibility of screwing up and having an extra hole to two in the body of your Jeep. While these are a little more difficult to put on&#8230;they are very easy to take off and can be done in just a couple minutes (faster than the front bumper) in case you&#8217;re ever wanting to do a deep clean on your Jeep or get them re-powdercoated.</p>

<p>A heavier duty diff cover is a no brainer, espeically if you&#8217;re running the stock Dana 44 axel in the JL and don&#8217;t have immediate plans to do a heavier duty axel swap. That little extra strengh in one of the most precesious areas of your drivetrain can go a long ways. If you take your rig on some more serious trails you&#8217;re going to drag, slide and grind the diff&#8230;better be safe than sorry.</p>

<p>Ok, true story here&#8230;&#8217;twas the night before Easter Jeep Safari, when all through the house none of my kids were stirring, not even my wife&#8230;meanwhile I was out in the garage installing the Motobilt Spare Tire Delete kit. (<strong>Pro Tip:</strong> if you&#8217;re powdercoating the delete kit make sure to get the bolts blasted and coated as well since they have existing paint on them and can scratch a little during installation.</p>

Armoring-up your Jeep Wrangler JL with Motobilt

<p>This video will walk you through the steps showing how to take measurements for almost any type of drive shaft.</p>

<blockquote><p>Why do I need to measure?</p></blockquote>
<h3 id="let-me-explain">Let me explain.</h3>
<p>Over the years, we have built well over 10,000 drive shafts for the Jeep Wrangler JK alone. We have built countless more for just about any other type of Jeep, Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Land Rover; all of it. We know that there are often consistently standard lengths for some vehicles, but we also know that some vehicles have wild variations in drive shaft lengths. Rather than get into all the details of all the different vehicles, I will address the low hanging fruit, the Jeep Wrangler JK.</p>
<h3 id="different-lifts">Different lifts.</h3>
<p>Take a look at all the different lift kits available for a Jeep JK. The amount of options is dizzying. 3” is 3” though, right? It shouldn’t matter whose 3” lift you install, the length will end up being the same, right? Wrong. I believe the biggest factor here is control arms. Control arms are basically the pivot arms that horizontally attach your axle to the frame. Some lifts come with new control arms, some do not. Some come with fixed control arms, some come with adjustable length control arms. So, if one 3” lift uses the stock control arms but another comes with control arms that are 1” longer than stock, that second kit is going to require a longer drive shaft. It gets even more complicated when they come with adjustable control arms, these are variable length and it is up to the installer to decide how long or short to adjust them. Because there are so many different lifts and different lift manufacturers, it is impossible for us to keep track of all these variables.</p>
<h3 id="anomalies">Anomalies.</h3>
<p>Here is an example of something we have encountered before. One of our vendors, they do a lot of installations of lift kits. They were doing a lot of the exact same lift on the exact same type of Jeep. Whenever they would order, they would just order the same length shafts they ordered the time before. This was fine, it got them the correct fit shafts for half a dozen vehicles. Until one day the front shaft didn’t fit, it was 2 inches different than all the other times. On paper it was the exact same build but for whatever reason it wasn’t the same length. No one could figure out why, but why didn’t matter, what mattered is that it didn’t fit. Stories like this are not common, but they do happen. We have all been there, we go to the local parts store and the part we get doesn’t fit our vehicle correctly. It is supposed to fit, but it doesn’t.</p>
<h3 id="complexity-of-different-builds">Complexity of different builds.</h3>
<p>Sometimes it is straight forward, 3”- 4” lift on a JK. But sometimes people will do motor swaps, axle swaps, or other things that affect the length of the shafts. This can get real complicated and difficult to keep straight.</p>
<h3 id="what-does-it-mean-for-a-drive-shaft-to-fit">What does it mean for a drive shaft to fit?</h3>
<p>Just because you can get a drive shaft installed, does not mean it fits. Drive shafts do compress and extend, but a common misconception is that they compress and extend to allow them to be a bit of a one size fits all. This is not the case. The reason they do is basically the same reason your shocks compress and extend. Because as you go down the road and your axle moves up and down they need to get longer and shorter. There is some leeway for fitment but not a lot. For most shafts, anything more than 1” off from fitting correctly could spell disaster.</p>
<h3 id="one-reason-we-request-measurements-when-others-dont-is-because-we-care">One reason we request measurements when others don’t is because we care.</h3>
<p>We want to make sure that whatever you buy from us is going to be the right thing and is going to work well for you. We could send out more “universal fit” shafts and just figure that it is your problem if it doesn’t fit. But that’s not who we are.</p>
<h3 id="measuring-is-easy">Measuring is easy.</h3>
<p>It doesn’t matter if the drive shaft is installed or removed. You simply measure the distance from your transfer case yoke (or flange) to your axle yoke (or flange). It doesn’t have to be perfectly accurate; the nearest quarter inch is fine. It takes less than a minute and can be done in your driveway.</p>
<p>It doesn’t affect the price or the delivery time. We don’t charge more or take longer to build custom shafts. You might as well get a perfect tailored fit.</p>
<p>All that being said&#8230;if you can’t measure, or just plain don’t want to there are standard lengths that we can go off. If you are getting shafts for a JK we won’t require measurements, just recommend it. For other vehicles however there are enough different length possibilities that we will require a length measurement. It is quick, it is easy, and it could save you from getting the wrong drive shaft.</p>

How to Measure for a Custom Drive Shaft

<p>**(and why it&#8217;s a bad idea 😂) **</p>
<p>**We’ve all seen it, “You can’t run a big tire on a Dana 30” on every forum and Facebook group imaginable. **</p>
<p>However, with the advancements of technology and strength in the JL Advantek series axles, I decided to test the limits and see what I could get away with.</p>

<p>Now, 40s were not the original plan. I wanted to stick to 37s with the m186 and m210 (also called Dana 30 and 44) axles on the sport JL as I felt that was a safe setup. But after 40s were delivered instead of 37s, I decided to push my luck instead.</p>

<p>For over two months, I drove every day on this combination with 100% stock axles and never had an issue. Even the power on road was still ok with the 2.0 turbo.</p>

<p>After watching Jeff in <a href="https://revkit.com/grapplerjk?target=_blank">grapplerjk</a> climb up a canyon with ease, I decided to try to do the same.</p>
<p>Bob Corcoran (<a href="https://revkit.com/boblife365?target=_blank">boblife365</a>) spotted me through the first few sections of rock where it was immediately noticeable that lockers would be needed to continue. I pushed forward and ended up high centered on a boulder I could not get around and we decided that this was the end of the line for the little JL that could(‘nt).</p>

<p>After backing down a few ledges, I found myself stuck again. Rocking in every direction without any real movement was getting frustrating and at some point I hit the gas a little too hard and heard the all too familiar sound of disappointment.</p>
<blockquote><p>The spider gear broke and eventually exploded, ruining the ring and pinion gears.</p></blockquote>
<p>Luckily the JL has a front axle disconnect which allowed me to run in 2wd without spinning the ring and pinion gears and causing more damage.</p>

<p>Sand Hollow is a literal rock crawling playground and we just can&#8217;t get enough of it! First we hit a trail at the back edge of the park called &#8220;The Maze&#8221;, and since many of our group have run it before&#8230; we ran it backwards to shake things up.</p>

<p>The Trail to SEMA crew left the mountain top forests of Big Bear for the Jeep-destroying terrain of Johnson Valley, CA. As home of the annual King of the Hammers race, Johnson Valley is the home of the nastiest wheeling in the United States.</p>
<p>With trails named Sledgehammer, Jack Hammer, and Wrecking Ball these trails are not messing around. We chose to run the Sledgehammer trail, which is not long but is also not easy. Our group had to fight their way to the top, but we all made it there&#8230; our rigs also got there, but not without some damaging reminders of our time there.</p>

<p>Trail day 3, our 2nd day in Big Bear, CA takes us to the Holcomb Creek trail. During the wet season this could very well be the hardest trail in the Big Bear trail system. For our crew it was more of a scenic day on the trail following Holcomb Creek through a canyon filled with Autumn vistas and a few obstacles and some wet and slippery conditions that would prove more than a challenge for a few of our participants.</p>
<p>Once we finished up day 2 in Big Bear the crew headed down to Johnson Valley, home of the King of The Hammers Ultra 4 race every February.</p>

<p><strong>12 vehicles, 12 trails, 24hours ⛰⏱☠️</strong></p>
<p>24 Hour Hell and Back Trail Challenge is the ultimate test of endurance for both man and machine. Watch Parts 1 &amp; 2 now below.</p>
<blockquote><p>An &#8220;off-road Ironman&#8221; &#8211; consisting of hardcore 4wheeling, team work, camaraderie and adventure.</p></blockquote>
<p>Participants were chosen from Florida, New York, Mississippi, Georgia, Kentucky, and from other states across the nation to meet at Hollerwood Off-Road Park located in Stanton, Kentucky also known as Slade.</p>
<p><strong>Every driver received a Flex, Rocks &amp; Rollovers / 24 Hell and Back branded Rockwelll Watch with a timer that was pre-set to 24 hours that could not be stopped until the event was finished.</strong></p>

<p>The first half of the day was set up to ward off anyone who was prepared to make it through the second half of the event. Cable Hill and Hairpin took out two participants with broken axle shafts and bent tie rods.</p>
<p>The second half of the day pitted participants against themselves with double diamond obstacles, long and scenic rides through the valleys forcing them to stay awake until the next obstacle started. River crossing and nighttime exploration in a rock cave on the side of a mountain.</p>
<blockquote><p>When nightfall finally set in, participants entered the hardest part of the challenge fighting off fatigue from the earlier part of the day.</p></blockquote>
<p>By initial sunrise the next morning, you could feel that participants had initially underestimated the challenge.<br />
Passengers who were not driving were found sleeping in passenger sections of some vehicles. Others decided to quit the challenge or resting back at the trailhead.</p>
<p>Capping the event off with a frantic ride to the top of a mountain to watch the sunrise and relax for a moment before we ended the 24 hours with climbing &#8220;lower staircase&#8221; &#8211; a very technical obstacle &#8211; especially after 23 hours of wheeling!</p>

<h2 id="how-did-you-get-into-the-jeep-scene">How did you get into the Jeep scene?</h2>
<p>Basically I started when I was a kid. I grew up in a small town in Alabama and there wasn&#8217;t much to do there except play in the woods and mud. It kind of just grew into a passion from there. I got out of the scene a bit when I was in the military.</p>
<blockquote><p>I moved to Colorado back in 1999 and was out in the mountains and a Jeep just sort of seemed like a natural fit.</p></blockquote>
<p>And everything just kind of evolved from there.</p>

<h2 id="tell-us-the-story-about-project-mushu-how-did-the-ride-come-to-be">Tell us the story about Project Mushu. How did the ride come to be?</h2>
<p>Honestly&#8230;it&#8217;s my wife&#8217;s Jeep (technically). She had a TJ and decided and we didn&#8217;t need two Jeeps because we were always together, so we got rid of that one. Well, I had 4-door JK and we went out to Crooked Canyon and I made the mistake of letting her drive my rig for a few minutes and that was all it took.</p>
<blockquote><p>As soon as we got home, she found a red 2-door that she liked. We actually ended up picking it up the same day we got back from the trail.</p></blockquote>

<p>She&#8217;s had a couple Jeeps before, and she liked them, but it wasn&#8217;t something she felt like she had to have&#8230;until she saw this one.</p>

<h2 id="now-how-about-the-build-process">Now, how about the build process?</h2>
<p>It was one of those things where we went ot the dealership and it was 100% bone stock, it had never been wheeled before. So we ended up with it and it&#8217;s actually been through a couple of different stages in it&#8217;s life. First, it had a 2-inch lift kit and 35-inch tires on it. Then, it went to 38-inch tires and a 6-inch stretch in the rear. And then it went full on ridculousness&#8230;Dyna 60s on the truck and all that.</p>

<p>And as you know Jeeps are never finished, but to get it where it is right now it was probably about a 4-5 month process. From collecting the parts we needed to building axles to doing the actual work itself, we got it built up at Northridge 4&#215;4 here in Colorado.</p>
<blockquote><p>All of it was done after hours and on the weekends&#8230;no body around but me and the Jeep basically.</p></blockquote>
<p>We only ran into a few hiccups, haha. In particular, with rear coilover set up. The coilover towers are frenched into the frame so that actually eliminated where the factory rear trackbar mounts. So I ended up having to figure out how to make that work. There were a bunch of little things like that I&#8217;ve never seen done before that we had to work through.</p>

<h2 id="what-are-most-proud-of-this-build">What are most proud of this build?</h2>
<p>Honestly, I think I&#8217;m most proud of the fact that you don&#8217;t know exactly what you&#8217;re looking at.</p>
<blockquote><p>You have to do a double take. You walk by and you have to stop and just give it a second look.</p></blockquote>
<p>With all the matched paint armour and everything, people don&#8217;t actually notice all the details until the walk by. It&#8217;s fun to watch their face and they stop and are like &#8220;wait a minute, what am I looking at?&#8221; It&#8217;s super funny because you totally know when it happens.</p>

<h2 id="whats-your-favorite-place-youve-take-this-build-to-ride">What&#8217;s your favorite place you&#8217;ve take this build to ride?</h2>
<p>My favorite trails in local Colorado are Wheeler Lake and Spring Creek. As far as favorite place to ride, Moab is always awesome. But, I like wheeling everywhere because different trails bring different challenges.</p>

<h1 id="tell-us-a-bit-about-the-northridge-4x4">Tell us a bit about the Northridge 4&#215;4.</h1>
<p>Well, I was a product rep at the time when I got a phone call from a friend who was asking me if I wanted to get more involved in the industry about 2 years ago. He told me that David, the President and Founder of Northridge 4&#215;4 was looking for a General Manager in the Colorado location and he suggested I give David a call. So I ended up calling David and the next morning I was sitting in the office talking to him and just like that a few weeks later, I was sitting in a desk.</p>
<blockquote><p>One of my favorite things about this position and the brand is seeing someone come in when they bring their Jeep in to get some work done, and their reaction when you give it back to them. It&#8217;s rewarding almost&#8230;it&#8217;s a super cool feeling to know that you helped to provide that level of excitement.</p></blockquote>
<p>You know almost instantly how they&#8217;re feeling when they get it back and it&#8217;s an awesome feeling.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re still growing every day. We very much still a grassroots company&#8230;we make sure to treat everyone who walks through the front door like their family. And I think that&#8217;s what separates us from some of the other guys. We&#8217;re not paid on comission or anything like that. I&#8217;d rather give you the correct advice then have you just spend a dollar with me. I feel like if we take care of every customer and treat them like family, then they&#8217;re going to come back.</p>

<h2 id="whats-one-piece-of-advice-you-have-for-beginners-or-people-looking-to-get-into-wheeling">What&#8217;s one piece of advice you have for beginners or people looking to get into wheeling?</h2>
<p>If you have an idea in your head, don&#8217;t be afraid to go for it. There was a lot of stuff that was floating around in my head for years and it took forever for me to actually do something about it. And when I finally did it, it was so rewarding and it came out exactly how I wanted it.</p>
<blockquote><p>So I encourage everyone to just set a goal and do things to reach that goal. Don&#8217;t just sit around and think &#8220;I wish I could do this&#8230;,&#8221; just go for it! Don&#8217;t want for tomorrow.</p></blockquote>
